Trujillo, Madrid and Inland Spain

Famous for its imposing castle which dates to the 13th century (some Moorish parts to the 9th century) Trujillo, birthplace to Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of the Incas, is a key stop on the Ruta de los Conquistadores. The Plaza mayor is truly magnificent with its statue of Pizarro, mansion houses and the church of san Martin which jointly have been declared an Asset of National Interest.
Guadalupe, Caceres and Mérida are within easy reach and Trujillo is well placed to visit the Monfrague Nature Park, a must-see for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike.

  • Ruta de los Conquistadores – Pizarro, Cortés the conquerors of Latin America.
  • Castillo de Trujillo – 13th century castle built on the remains of a 9th century Moorish fortress
  • Plaza Mayor – one of Spain's most beautiful historic squares with Pizarro's statue presiding
  • Take a trip to Guadalupe, pilgrimage site with its enormous monstery, Cathedral and Zurbaran paintings
  • Visit Caceres, Spain's first listed heritage city
  • Roman Mérida – capital of Lusitania, the Empire's westernmost province. UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Monfrague Nature Park – vast holm and cork oak forests teeming with bird life – kites, vultures and black storks.
  • Local up & coming wineries – Bodegas Habla, just 25 minutes south of Trujillo is a favourite.
