To call this a historic hotel doesn't even begin to describe it. For nearly 5 centuries the palace was home to the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, perhaps Andalucia's most prominent family which gave us, among others, Guzman El Bueno, commander of the Spanish Armada and the Red Duchess who stood up to Franco leading to her exile and imprisonment.

Nowadays the palace has been converted into a museum, housing one of Europe's most important document archives, and a very special small hotel.

With just nine rooms the hotel is a fantastic base to get to know historic Sanlucar de la Barrameda with its Manzanilla Sherry bodegas and traditional bars as well as the nearby nature reserve of Doñana just across the river. The rooms are very spacious and decorated and furnished in keeping with the nature of the buildings as are the common areas. There is also an airy courtyard to sit out with plenty of shade and tea rooms which are open to the public.

SanlĂșcar de Barrameda, Andalucia

The reason why most people come here is to see the huge bodegas where the dry “manzanilla” wine is produced. Other main attractions are to take a boat trip up the Guadalquivir, to visit the Doñana Park, the Salinas (salt beds) and pine forest of Monte Algaida, to wander round old Salúcar, to visit its lively market, to eat the freshest of fish and the famous prawns from here and just to be in a real place, still untouched by mass tourism.

  • Visit sherry bodegas, best come in early June for Fería de Manzanilla, a celebration of the local version.
  • Doñana National Park, a haven for migratory birds
  • Boat trip up the Guadalquivir
  • Visit the local villages and Cadiz itself
  • See the famous Andalucian processions at Easter week or the Romeria del Rocío in late May
  • Horse racing on the beach, two weekends in August
