Housed in a 15th-century mansion, home to the first Marqués de Santillana, the 5-star Casa del Marqués retains many period features, including teh original starcase , hewn from a single tree, and oozes historical charm.

The sumptuous décor in the fifteen rooms and communal lounges further enhances the period feeling and the lushly-planted terrace is the perfect spot to relax, rain or shine, to relax and enjoy a gin and tonic from the all-day bar.

Whilst most rooms are classically decorated some have more modern touches and all have en-suite bathrooms and offer a pillow menu. There are three superior rooms with balconies.

The location is hard to beat, just near the Colegiata de Santa Juliana and the main square yet with easy access by car. And with private parking it’s the ideal base to explore this wonderful region, with the coast, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera all within easy reach.

Santillana del Mar, Cantabria

Santillana del Mar, North Spain

Santillana del Mar, about seven kms from the sea, is a beautiful village of grand old mansions, each with its coat-of-arms, and traditional farmhouses. It is justly popular with visitors as a cultural centre: there are two museums and often exhibitions of more than local interest while the wonderful Romanesque Collegiate Church holds concerts. It also has some very good pottery shops as well as stalls selling the local milk and cake (sobaos), and trinkets, and has a good choice of cafes and restaurants. In summer it is busy – but even then, the local farmers continue about their business, so that cows and carts mix with the camera-carrying tourists.
