Originally constructed in 1898, this Belle-Epoque hotel is recognised as one of northern Spain’s most prestigious Spas. Comprised of two main buildings connected by an underground passage, this 4-star country hotel is a 4-minute walk from the town of Puente Viesgo and 1.8 km from the fabulous cave of El Castillo, featuring the oldest known cave art in Europe.

Rooms are traditional and feature elegant wood furniture, some have terraces. Upgraded rooms have contemporary decor, and suites feature a separate sitting room.

Though enjoying a tranquil setting the hotel is strategically placed at the centre of Cantabria, a stone’s throw from Santander. This is the ideal base for exploring the ‘lost-in-tine’ interior valleys, the rugged coast and the city. Don’t miss the Cabarceno Wildlife Park just nearby which boasts an elephant enclosure big enough to house the entirety of Madrid’s Zoo!

Puente Viesgo, Cantabria, North Spain

At the gateway to the Valle de Pas, Puente Viesgo is a pretty village set right on the river, famous for its elegant spa and prehistoric caves. Whilst not as grandiose as the Altamira Cave in Santillana here you can still see the original paintings close up and get a better feeling of how the Cro-Magnon people lived – truly fascinating!

Although only half an hour from Santander you can already feel a change of pace here and there are some great little bars and restaurants. There are no end of scenic drives and a ‘Via Verde’ cycleway which runs south into the beautiful Valle de Pas or north right into Santander.

Famed as one of the best preserved of all the valleys of ‘Green Spain’ the Valle de Pas offers a fine heritage of monasteries and Romanesque temples as well as unique the humble, yet unique, shepherd’s dwellings known as ‘cabañas pasiegas’, some dating back to the 16th century. There’s some fantastic walking, the spectacular Cabarceno Wildlife Park and one of northern Spain’s best Spas at Puente Viesgo – and the cliff-backed coves and sandy beaches to either side of Santander are within easy reach…

Finally make sure to sample the local produce made with the unusually creamy local milk – a packet of ‘Sobaos’ should last you a week – bet they don’t though!
