Elegant, historical, townhouse hotel – Navarran style
Housed in an 18th century building in the old quarter of Bera de Bidasoa this elegant family home has been converted into a comfortable small hotel, taking great care to preserve the original character of the house but without any compromise when it comes to guest comfort.
The interior decor has been carried out entirely by the owners with artefacts, furniture and paintings that have been in the family for generations. Bedrooms and the bathrooms are spacious, light and airy and well-equipped and there are several common areas including bright sitting rooms and a sunny gallery on the ground floor with a wall of glass which really brings the garden inside.
In warmer months the garden itself provides the perfect refuge after a day's walk in the mountains and the restaurant, popular with the locals, offers local Navarran gastronomy at its very best.

In the mountains of the Atlantic Pyrenees yet just minutes' drive to the Bay of Biscay, Bera de Bidasoa (or simply ‘Bera’) is the perfect base from which to discover northern Navarra as well as the French Pays Basque.
Set in the Bidasoa Valley, between the Peñas de Haya Nature Park and La Rhune, walkers, climbers and nature lovers will find no shortage of things to see and do. The Via Verde del Bidasoa, 42km of disused river-side railway line converted into a stunning walking / cycle track, runs just past the village whilst just over the Lizuniaga mountain pass you can ride the historic Petite Tren de La Rhune to the 900m summit, for truly amazing views over the Bay of Biscay.
The area is famous for its picture-postcard, traditional villages of which there are plenty to explore in the valleys of Bidasoa and Baztan. Just nearby Lesaka (Nelson’s base for the siege of San Sebastian and the Battle of Bera de Bidasoa) and Etxalar are both a pleasure to msey around and there’s always something going on, be it local fiestas, a frontón match or rural strong-man sports, Basque-style.
A fifteen minute drive will take you to Sare, the first of a string of pretty villages on the French side or Iparralde (literally ‘the northern lands’) as the locals call it. Mooching around is highly recommended but meanwhile you might wat to sample the famous peppers at Espelette or take a dip at the inland beach at St-Pee-Sur-Nivelle.
- San Sebastian and Hondarribia are within easy reach, as are Hendaye, St Jean de Luz and Biarritz on the French side, offering a remarkable choice of excellent beaches with good surf, beautiful historic centres and, of course, a myriad of gastronomic delights!
