Olite is one of of Spain's most spectacular and best-kept medieval towns with its delightful old-town huddled around and below the fairy-tale Royal Palace-cum-Castle which once housed the Kings of Navarra.
The castle itself is not to be missed but just to stroll around the ancient streets is fascinating with many noble houses boasting imposing arched doorways and coats of arms.
At the heart of the Navarran wine region and at the north of the Ribera de Navarra, famed for its delicious high-end market-garden produce, Olite is the ideal base to enjoy the region's wonderful gastronomic offering.
The town has a good selection of bars and restaurants, mostly arranged around the main squares, and a lovely outdoor municipal pool for when things get hot (and in the summer months they certainly can). Visit the medieval Palace-Castle of Olite
- Explore the town's medieval streets, palaces and churches
- Try the local Navarran wines – red, white and popular rose
- Head out to the fortress towns of Ujué and Artajona
- Don't miss the spectacular landscape of the Las Bardeanas desert
- Try the local peppers, asparagus and artichokes – second to none
- For a family trip Senda Viva nearby is an excellent day out – combined theme-park and zoo
- Visit Pamplona, Navarra's capital, famous for the running of the bulls in early July
- Chill out with the locals at the town swimming pool
- In August watch out for the medieval fair – a true spectacle!
