Just over the border from France and a stone’s throw from the Bay of Biscay, the village of Etxalar sits among the lovely green mountains of northern Navarra, where the Pyrenees come down to meet the sea. The village itself, famed for its smuggling traditions and its unique style of pigeon hunting in the autumn, is beautifully preserved in the style particular to the valleys of the Baztan and Bidasoa and has two good bar / restaurants, an open air swimming pool and a large fronton (open air pelota court, doubles as a playground on rainy days).
