Lekeitio, North Spain

With its fine beaches, fishy restaurants by the harbour and colourful tuna boats bobbing at anchor, Lekeitio is possibly the most picturesque of all the Basque fishing ports.

Set half way between Bilbao and San Sebastian (just over an hour’s drive from either) it’s out-of-the-way position has helped to protect it from over-modernisation and to maintain its traditional Basque way of life. That said the town has had some share of tourism due to its wonderful beaches, authentic gastronomy and the popular thalassotherapy spa near the harbour and there’s always plenty going on throughout the summer months.

Although a little off the beaten track a short drive west will take you to Gernika, and the spectacular Nature Reserve of Urdaibai with the pretty town of Mundaka at the mouth of the estuary. Head east and you can pick your way along he coast through fishing villages to Zumaia, with it’s awesome rock formations, and Getaria (birthplace of Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the globe – and no, it wasn’t Magellan) and on to San Sebastian.

  • Locally, if you can drag yourself away from the beaches and tapas bars, there are lovely walks to the lighthouse, out to the island at low tide or into the emerald-green hills behind the town.
  • Enjoy the pintxos – especially the local anchovies and tuna
  • Walk To San Nicolas Island
  • Visit The Basilica Of The Asunción De Santa María
  • Enjoy the beaches, Isuntza and Karraspio
  • Head west to Guernica and Mundaka
  • Learn a little Basque – the local dialect is famous for being the most difficult of all!
  • Explore the Urdaibai Nature reserve – fascinating and beautiful
  • Head east to Zumaia (amazing rocks) and Getaria (famous seafood)
  • Visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe made famous by Game of Thrones
