Magical theme hotel in 17th century mansion in La Rioja
This fine 17th century mansion, in the centre of the picturesque, medieval village of Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron, in La Rioja Alta, has been recently restored but certainly has a history!
Originally the home of a wealthy family, in the 1920's and 30's, the building was put to use as a bakery, theatre and cinema before, during the Civil War, being occupied by Italian troops who passed on their pasta recipes to the locals.
The present owners, Laura and Jose Angel, the most welcoming and attentive of hosts, fell in love with the place an restored the building into the very special small hotel it is today.
Maintaining many of the original features – the magnificent stonework, the high beamed ceilings, the impressive main staircase and cupula, they painstakingly decorated and furnished the very comfortable rooms with cinematic themes, linking them to the history of the house and creating a perfect balance of the past and present.
Accommodation
Highly individual rooms – themed around the cinema, the theatre, literature and music. Double or twin, suites; family rooms (connecting), triple and quadruple rooms. Also adapted for reduced mobility.
Each room is different. All are beautifully and meticulously decorated and furnished according to their theme, with beamed ceilings and exposed stone, blending perfectly with modern touches. The first floor rooms have balconies and the attic rooms have skylights. The bathrooms too are all different and all beautifully tiled. They vary depending on the style of the room – there are free standing baths and walk in showers, sometimes both.
Extra beds and cots are available.
All the rooms have air conditioning, bathrobes, quality toiletries, hairdryers, a desk and T.V. Some of the suites have a “mini kitchen” with a microwave and cutlery and crockery and mini fridges.N.B. In some of the attic rooms parts of the ceilings are quite low so not suited to the very tall.

The epitome of a classic Riojan village, seemingly untouched by time with stone-built houses, an imposing medieval castle and church and a river running through Cuzcurrita is quite sleepy for most of the year but comes alive in the summer, when Basque families move in to enjoy the hot, dry climate and the swimming pools, and again in October when the wine harvest brings life to the whole region.
With Haro and Santo Domingo de la Calzada just nearby the village is well placed to discover the highlights of the Rioja wine region and the lesser know mountains the region has to offer (you can ski in the winter months) around the pretty town of Ezcaray.
