Cáceres, Madrid and Inland Spain
Known as the city of storks, is a living museum of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, founded by the Romans, destroyed by Vandals and rebuilt by the Arabs. Its large, stone paved Plaza Mayor is adjoined to one side by the nearly perfectly preserved Roman-Moorish walls and towers which enclose a beautiful city of grand mansions with amazing facades, built with gold from the Americas and with romantic sounding names. Casa de Carvajal, Casa del Sol, Palacio de Toledo-Moctezuma, Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, Casa de las Cigueñas… the completeness and fine preservation of the old town is what makes Cáceres so special. And not far away is Casar de Cáceres where the camembert-like cheese “Torta de Casar” is made.
