Tucked inside the medieval city walls near the aqueduct, in the enchanting and fascinating city of Evora with its vast array of historical sights, this 16th century olive mill is now a delightful small, elegant and friendly hotel.

With well-appointed spacious, modern rooms, lovely sitting areas with just the right blend of antique and contemporary furniture, a pleasant garden patio and many original parts of the building still intact, it retains the charm of an old house.

Particularly endearing are its wonderful staff who will go out of their way to assist you, from organising a tour to one of the 50 wineries in the local region, giving great recommendations for days out or simply producing a pile of homemade pancakes at your whim! Nothing is too much for them.

The amazing breakfasts too, using locally sourced organic produce, from five different types of bread to free range eggs, are amongst the region's best.

From this quiet corner, it is an easy walk to all the mesmerising sights, little shops and tempting restaurants in the Évora.

The hotel is also very well placed for trips further afield in the beautiful region of the Alentejo – to the hilltop fortress towns of Monsaraz, Marvao and Castelo Vide, to the pottery towns of El Corval and Redondo, to the "marble towns" of Vila Viçosa and Estremoz, to Comporta for a day on the beach, to Arraiolos and its traditional carpets, to megaliths galore and to UNESCO World Heritage, Elvas, with the oldest British war cemetery from the Napoleonic Wars! You will find it hard to tear yourself away!

Photo of Roman ruins - Évora

Évora, Portugal

Conquered by the Romans in 59BC and of great importance in Roman Lusitania (witness to which the fine second century temple that stands to this day), and subsequently occupied by Visigoths and Moors, who gave the town its street layout and defensive walls, it´s easy to see why Évora enjoys the status of World Heritage Site.

In medieval times an elaborate cathedral with delightful cloisters and several palaces were added and later the University, which gives the city a lively atmosphere still, and the attractive main square which forms the social hub.

Set above the Alentejo plain (hence its strategic importance), Évora is a superb base to explore all the treasures the region has to offer. Neolithic monuments and small family-run wineries are just nearby. The potteries of Redondo a little further and a day trip to Marvão and the fortress towns in the mountains near the border with Spain are quite feasible. The 2nd century Templo Romano – dedicated to Diana – or maybe Julius Caesar?

  • The Manueline- Gothic charms of the Igreja de São Francisco.
  • 16th Century Aqueducto de Água de Prata.
  • Museo do Évora – all the phases of Évora's history in an elegant, cloistered setting.
