Parador de León, set in the impressive 16th century monastery of San Marcos, full of history
The 16th century Hostal de San Marcos, now the Parador de Leon, is a truly iconic building at the heart of the city and one of Spain's finest Paradors.
Behind its ornate Plateresque facade the hotel has recently undergone a thorough three-year long refurbishment, bringing it right up to 21st century, with everything you would expect from a 5-star hotel.
Beyond the lofty, ultra-modern reception area (be prepared for a shock!) the San Marcos, originally a monastery-cum-hospital for pilgrims on their way to Santiago, is truly a living museum. Ask about a guided tour at reception or take a stroll in the peaceful cloister and marvel at the 500-plus paintings and tapestries which line the walls.
Superior rooms are in the main building and furnished with antiques whilst standard rooms are in the more modern annex. All have been brought up to date in the recent renovation with a simple, almost minimalist style making the most of the natural materials – and all offer the highest standard of comfort and facilities.
Facilities include a gastronomic restaurant and a garden courtyard, as well as lounge areas with artwork, stone walls, delightfully intricate ceilings and Gothic arches.
