Vilafranca del Penedès is a charming town located in the heart of Catalonia’s Penedès wine region, known for its deep-rooted viticulture traditions, medieval architecture, modernist buildings and human tower builders. It is a central hub for wine production, particularly Cava, the renowned sparkling wine of the region. This picturesque town is the perfect destination for wine lovers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a glimpse of authentic Catalan culture.
Vilafranca is famous for its castellers, or human tower builders. This tradition, recognized as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is deeply rooted in the town’s identity. Watching a Casteller performance is a must-do when visiting.
Vilafranca del Penedès is also known for its gastronomy, which is closely tied to the products of the land and local wines. Traditional Catalan dishes, such as escalivada (grilled vegetables), butifarra (Catalan sausage), and calcots (grilled spring onions), are common in local restaurants, accompanied by excellent wines from the Penedès region. Nearby San Marti Sarroca (it’s possible to walk there along footpaths) is a veritable culinary hotspot with eight restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.
Within half an hour’s drive you can find yourself on the lovely beaches of the Costa de Garraf, including the beautiful town of Sitges or the less well known, low key Altafulla, or in the famous monastery of Montserrat. An hour’s journey will take you to Barcelona (also accessed by train from Vilafranca), or to Tarragona, a lively Mediterranean city recognized as a heritage site due to its wealth of Roman ruins.
